Geography
The city is located at 30 km of Saint-Etienne.
History
The first mention of Doizieu goes back to 812: “in the country of Lyon on a named coast Doizieu”.At the beginning of the 9th century, Doizieu belongs to the church of Vienna. Saint Laurent owner of the parish of Doizieu, little known in Drill and Jarez was very honoured with the Dauphiné. The establishment of the feudal system was later than elsewhere because it was complicated by a tangle of seigniories, belonging initially to the family of Farnay which gave her name to the castle of Farnanches, then in paréage with Lavieu which Layre and the Saint-Germain succeeded.
When the Guichard archbishop and the count of Drill Guy II fix, in 1173, the limits of Drill and on the ecclesiastical county of Lyon, Doizieux still depends on the church of Vienna.
An act of 1487 gives a report on the division of the forest of Doizieu between three lords. Louis de Layre, lord of Doizieu, Artaud of Saint-Germain, lord of the castle of Farnanches, and the chapter of the church of Lyon.
In 1597 the lord of Doizieu and Saint-Chamond, Jacques Mittre repurchases the grounds of the farnanches. At that time, the city is in full expansion and to ensure its development, the close forest is invaluable. Totality was resold for 650.000 books with the marquis Jean Jacques Gallet of Mondragon in 1768. The sale contract mentions an old woman square tower without castle nor house and a wood saw on Dorlay. Later, the family of Mondragon will yield this tower to be used as town hall.
The marquis de Mondragon, having bought the marquisat of Saint-Chamond, wanted to exploit his forest and in 1770 it ran up against the opposition of the inhabitants.
As in much of parishes, there were Homeric competitions between the church-mother and her appendices. The lord perceived the dîme and poured the adequate portion with the priest. In 1768 there were two parishes, in 1850 third is created. With the passing of years, the settlement of the low valley of Dorlay due to industrial rise, did not cease progressing to the detriment of the highlands.
The name of Doizieux means “river”.
In 1905 Doizieux was cut into two: the commune of It Terrace-on-Dorlay had just been born.
