The film

Scenario

In 1972 Sam Peckinpah is proposed for the adaptation of the novel Délivrance , which will be refused by the producers following dissensions with Warner. Finally it is John Bormann who will carry out film. The producer Daniel Melnick proposes to him as new subject to off adapt the novel The Siege Trencher' S Farm of which it obtained the rights. The scenario writers modify and take freedoms with the work of the Scottish author Gordon Mr. Williams by adding the scene of rape, and keeping original text only the aggression of the couple and the seat of the farm. The title Straw Dogs (Dogs of straws) is drawn from a translation of the verse V of CAD De Jing of Lao-tseu:
Hard are the sky and the ground which treat in dogs of straw the multitude of beings. Hard is the wise one which treats the people in dog of straw.
During the drafting of the scenario, Peckinpah takes note Imperative of the writings of the anthropologist Robert Ardrey African Genesis and The Territorial , whose principal thesis is that the human behaviors are mûs by animal instincts. This postulate will be used as a basis for the account of film. It is not a question of a film on the self-defense, but on an instinctive reaction to the attacks of the villagers, by a man who at the beginning refuses to resort to violence. Thus the rape of the woman of the professor is not the reason with the outburst of violence of this one, since it does not know during all the account that his wife was violated.

Casting

Peckinpah thinks for the role of the professor of Jack Nicholson, Beau Bridges, Stacy Keach, Sidney Poitier or Donald Sutherland and that of his wife with Judy Geeson, Jacqueline Bisset, Diana Rigg, Helen Mirren, Carol White, or Charlotte Rampling, but it is Dustin Hoffman which, interested by the history, obtains the role, and his wife is incarnated by a young English actor Susan George against the will of Dustin Hoffman which found the actress too young for the role. The remainder of the distribution is made up British actors, with inter alia David Warner (not credited with the credits), actor present in two other films of Peckinpah One Named Cable Hogue and Croix of iron . Dustin Hoffman disciple of the method of the Actor' S studio, itself chose the costumes, and the introverted pace which corresponded to the idea that it was done of the character.

Turning

The team turns in Cornouailles to the extreme south-west of England. Outsides are filmed in the village of St-Burian At the beginning of turning the director of the photography Brian Probyn is replaced by John Coquillon. The conditions of turning and the pneumonia of Peckinpah, which continues to direct all while being looked after by alcohol, will return the atmosphere of difficult film. Tensions will be created between the actors and the realizer. Thus Peckinpah refuses to employ a lining for the scene of the rape with Susan George.
