Dognen

Dognen /d ɔñә͂/is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Its inhabitants is called the dognénois.

Hydrography

The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by the Gave d' Oloron, (affluent of the Gave of Pau) and by its tributaries, the Lausset, the Layoû, the Laüs (10,5 km) and the torrent Arrieu Tor.

Toponymy

The toponym Dognen appears in the forms Donen (1214), Villa of Donenh (1235), Doneng (13th century), Feels Johan de Donenh (1384), Donheen (1546) and Doignen (1673).

The toponym Orrognen appears in the forms Ororeng and Ororenh (XIIIe century), lo molii of Ororenh (1384), the ostau of Aurorenh (1385), Oronenh and Oronhen (respectively 1538 and 1571) and Oroignen (1655).

The toponym Sensaudens , obviously a forgery Hagionyme, appears in the forms Senct-Saudeng (1267), the ostau of Feels-Saudenh (1385), SEN-Saudenh (1391), Feels-Saudenh (1385 and 1536), Saint-Saudains , Saint-Saudeins and Sensaudens (respectively 1675,1676 and 1684) and Saint-Saudens (1863).

History

Paul Raymond note that in 1385, Dognen depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx and counted 35 feux.
Dognen lodged four castles of which:
  • the castle of Orrognen whose ruins are visible close to the bridge. The stronghold of Orrognen depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx and concerned the Viscount Béarn. In 1655, it was set up in Baronnie, including Lay, Orrognen and Préchacq-Navarrenx. Orrognen belonged to the commune of Lay-Lamidou.
  • the castle of Sensaudens. The stronghold of Saudens Saint was vassal of the Viscount of Béarn, and depended on the bailliage of Navarrenx.
  • the castle of Espalungue (Latin spēlunca “cave”).
  • the Domecq house is destroyed today.

The village was marked by the presence of the Camp of Gurs established partly on its grounds.

The gave feeds an electric microphone-power station. One cultivates mainly the Maïs there.

Civil inheritance

A tumulus protohistoric, known as tumulus of the camp of Gurs, is present on the commune.

Religious heritage

The church Saint-Jean-Baptist dates from the XIXe century.

Environmental inheritance

One finds in Dognen of the sites of fishing to salmon of international repute: The Sand pit, the Old Reserve, Lacrampe and Coutubi.

Equipment

The commune has an elementary school.
