The Dogme95 is a cinematographic movement launched by Danish realizers under the impulse of Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, in reaction to the Anglo-Saxon spectaculars and the abusive use of artifices and special Effets outcome with formatted products, assuaging and impersonal. The goal of the dogma was to return from there to a more expressive formal sobriety, more original and considered to be ready to express the contemporary artistic stakes. Stripped any esthetic ambition, the films which resulted from this crystallized a sharp, nervous, brutal and realistic style, generally expressed by a turning undertaken with a camera eight millimetres and improvisation of several scenes.

The promoters of Dogme95, will never apply completely these principles, in particular the tenth, but will try to approach some as much as possible. An “official” label stamp films answering the criteria of proclamation sufficiently.

The text of Dogme95

Vow of chastity

I swear to subject to me to the rules which follow as enacted and approved by Dogme 95

1. Turning must be made on the spot. The accessories and decorations should not come (if one needs a particular accessory for the history, to choose a place where this accessory is present).

2. The sound should never be carried out separate of the images, and conversely (no music must be used unless she is not played while the scene is filmed).

3. The camera must be carried to the hand. Any movement, or possible not-movement with the hand is authorized. (The film should not be held where the camera is; turning must be done where the film is held).

4. The film must be colors. A special lighting is not acceptable. (If there is not enough light, the scene must be crossed, or a simple lamp attached to the camera).

5. Any optical treatment or filter is prohibited.

6. The film should not contain action in a surface way. (The murders, the weapons, etc should not appear).

7. The temporal and geographical diversions are prohibited. (I.e. the film is held here and now).

8. The films of kind are not acceptable.

9. The format of film must be the academic format 35mm.

10. The realizer should not be credited.

Moreover I swear as a realizer of réfréner my personal taste. I am not any more one artist. I swear to keep me to create a “work”, because I see the moment like more important than the whole. My supreme goal is to make leave the truth my characters and my scenes. I swear to do that by all the means available and at the price of my good taste and any esthetic consideration.

And thus I make my Vow of chastity
