Dogmatic council
The dogmatic notion of council was worked out by the fringe of the Catholic church which rejected the conclusions of the II {{E}} council of the Vatican. In fact, no official document of the Church forever given the definition of a “dogmatic council” in opposition to a council which would not be it.
The only justification given to this denomination is in a formula of the pope Paul VI evoking “pastoral” character of the Concile Vatican II during the general audience which it gave on January 12th, 1966 - it is not sufficient to deduce an official typology from it from the councils between “pastoral” and “dogmatic”.
It goes from there differently from the documents published by the councils, which are officially presented in their pastoral or dogmatic character. One will note thus that the council the Vatican II published two dogmatic constitutions: Lumen Gentium “on the Church” and Dei Verbum “on the divine Revelation”, but only one pastoral Constitution, Gaudium and Spes , “on the Church in the world of this time”.
The emergence of the concept of “dogmatic council” was done within the framework of a movement of reaction of part of the catholics, gathered in particular around the figure of M {{gr.}} Lefebvre (excommunicated by the Catholic church in 1988), after the reception of the council the Vatican II. One can note two significant points in particular:
-
the concept of “dogmatic council” is only in the publications resulting from the fringe catholic traditionalist;
- this concept is used there exclusively when it is question of the council the Vatican II, precisely to confer a statute of less authority to him.
