Mods were known to take Amphétamine S, called " in leapers ". In the song, the “dark face” of Jimmy appears, under the influence of the amphetamines.

This " Doctor Jimmy" is thus one of the four personalities of Jimmy, bagarreuse, violent and destroying: the reference to the the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of Robert Louis Stevenson is obvious.

The album is in fact broken up into four topics which represent these four facets of the personality of Jimmy. Each one of these personalities is associated with a member of the group. Doctor Jimmy is the title of the album which contains the “topic” of John Entwistle, Is It Me? . The author, Pete Townshend, explains the place of the song in Quadrophenia: Dr. Jimmy was thought as a song where with dimensions explosive is found, savage of the character. Like a furious bull in a porcelain store. It is made evil so much that it can arrive at the point where it is so desperate that it will be looked at more closely. The part where he says “ What is it, I' L take it. Who is she, I' L grates it ” (“ Which this is, I will take it. Who is it, I will violate it ”), it is really the way in which I see Keith Moon in his frame of mind more téméraire.

It is the longest song of the album, and one of most complex. The most outstanding remainder the prominent section of cords which one finds throughout the song. The musical structures change several times, between the verses of the song itself and those of the topic of John Entwistle.
