The prince Dmitriy Vladimirovich Galitzine or Golitsyn (born the October 29th 1771, dead the March 27th 1844 with Paris) was general-in-chief of the Russian cavalry during the Napoleonean Guerres.

Origin

He is the son of the prince Wladimir Galitzine and his wife Natalie Tchernyshova, grandson of the prince Dimitri Alexeievich Galitzine, ambassador with London, and descendant of Gediminas, large-duke of Lithuania,

Studies and military beginning

In 1781, it travels to Germany and France. About the middle of years 1780, its family settles in France, where the prince finishes his studies. The French revolution of 1789, of which he saw the first events, forces it to turn over in Russia, where he embraces the military career. Catherine II of Russia occupies the throne then. Entered the regiment of the horse guard, prince Galitzin is, with the famous general Souvorov with the Bataille of Praga, the November 4th 1794. He shows a great courage and gained his first decoration, the order of Saint-Georges.

During the reign of Paul Ier it goes up quickly in rank, initially promoted colonel, the May 2nd 1797, then with the major-general, the August 5th 1798, and finally general Lieutenant, the August 21st 1800. It receives the Ordre of Holy-Anne and becomes member of the Ordre of Hospital. From 28 years it orders the regiment of cuirassiers with Mittau. It enters, on this occasion, in the intimacy of Louis XVIII.

Napoleonean wars

When Russia associates its weapons with those of the Prussia against Napoleon i, Golitsyn fights bravely. In 1805, during the war of the Third coalition, its regiment begins the countryside in the bodies of the count Bennigsen in Silesia. The December 26th 1806 it courageously leads the 4th division to the Bataille of Golymin, where it obtains (the January 21st 1807) the Croix of Saint-Georges. This success, and that of Bennigsen to the Battle of Pułtusk stop advance of the French.

After that Galitzin orders the cavalry of the left wing and takes part in all the actions: the Eylau, Heilsberg, Friedland and with several other businesses where it is announced by its military talents and its intrepidity. It obtains the May 18th 1807, the Order of Vladimir Saint and the Order of the red Eagle (Prussia), then the June 25th, the supreme distinction of the kingdom of Prussia: the Order of the black Eagle and a sword of gold with diamonds with the inscription For courage .

It still makes the countryside of Finland in 1809, those of 1812 and 1813, where it orders a body of large cavalry. It is with the Bataille of Leipzig, and is mingled with all military operations with the countryside with 1814. Of an untiring heat, it is constantly on the battle field, with Champaubert, Montmirail. After the taken of Paris, the emperor Alexandre confers to him the title of general-in-chief.

Political career

In 1820 prince Galitzin is named military general governor of Moscow. Its administration leaves the most marked traces its capacity and solicitude with which he embraces all the interests entrusted to his guard. The French residing at Moscow are the object of the special protection of the general governor.

In 1832, at the time of the epidemic of Cholera, its devotion and its control were such as the city raises a monument to him.

Reprocess

The prince leaves Russia in May 1843 and goes to water Carlsbad, then from there in Paris, where he dies the April 8th 1844.
