Djilor

Djilor is a locality of the Sine-Saloum, in the west of the Senegal.

History

Sira Badiar Basket, mother of Maïssa Waly Dione, was the first queen of Djilor.

Administration

Djijor is a sub-prefecture of the Département of Foundiougne in the Région of Fatick. It is also the chief town of the rural community of Djilor.

Geography

The closest localities are Petche, Keur Omar, Boli, Keur Moda and Nguerkor.

Geological physics

Djilor is at the edge of Bolong S bordered of Palétuvier S, in a landscape characteristic of Sine-Saloum.

Population

The locality is in territory sérère. The practices animists coexist there with the Catholicisme and the Islam.

According to the PEPAM (Programme of drinking water and cleansing of the Millenium), Djilor counts 1.990 inhabitants and 225 households.

Personalities

The maternal family of Léopold Sédar Senghor was originating in Djilor. Entrusted to his uncle Waly, the former President passed itself there part of his childhood, before being internal with Ngazobil.

Some sources suggest that Senghor would not have been born with Joal as it is generally affirmed, but in Djilor, before being declared in Joal. This assumption is not confirmed by the interested party who declared himself born in Joal, but the house where lived his/her mother always exists in Djilor.
