Djemila (or Djamila) (of the Arab rear RTL جميلة, “the beautiful one”) is a commune of the North-East of the Algérie, located in the Wilaya de Sétif, in edge of the areas of Small Kabylie and Constantine. The commune shelters the vestiges of the antique Cuicul , quoted Roman, classified World heritage by UNESCO.

History

The municipe of Cuicul is founded on a broken ground in the north of the Algérie at the end of the 1st century (in 96) probably by the veterans of Nerva, its name is that of a village or a place Berbère which had not been Latinized yet. They is before Timgad one of last the colony of deduction in Africa. Under the Antonins the city is embellished of a forum of a Capitole, of several Temple S, a Curie, a gone and a theater. With the construction of the large thermal baths the reign of Convenient mark the urban expansion towards the south. Then under the Sévères of new districts organize themselves in the south of the forum, around a vast place, new streets are traced, and the city becomes little by little a city where it makes good things in life, where luxurious residences develop. Late antiquity sees Cuicul continuing a dynamic urban life: Christian quarters with baptistry and basilica are established at the southern end of the city, a civil basilica is built on the place sévérienne, the luxurious houses of notable do not cease being developed reaching considerable surfaces, being equipped in private thermal baths and giving considerable spaces of receptions (basilicas private). The house of Europe or that of Castorius reveals this art of living of the local notable rich person and preserved an important decoration of mosaic.

Cuicul is occupied in 431 by the Vandales which persecute the there catholic until their provisional departure after the agreements concluded with Genséric in 442.

The city was reconquered by the Byzantine , it finds a pretense of stability and activity, but fall into the lapse of memory at the end of the 6th century.

Within sight of the state of conservation of the ruins, the city was classified with the world heritage of humanity in 1981. ,
