Djebel Haroun

The djebel Haroun ( mount of Aaron ) is a mountain of Jordan, probably known in the Bible under the name of mount Hor (in Hebrew: הֹרהָהָר, Hor ha-Har ), place of died of the Prophet Aaron.

The Hor mount in the Bible

The Hor mount is described, in the Livre of the Numbers, like the place of died of Aaron, brother of Moïse and first large priest of the Hebrew . It would have lost the life on the mountainsides at the 123 years age. It should not be confused with another Hor mount, located much more at north (can be identifiable with the Mont Hermon).

If the identification of the Hor mount in Djebel Haroun is very old, dating from the time of Flavius Josèphe, it was sometimes called in question at the beginning of the 20th century.

Nevertheless, the sanctuary built at the end of the 13th century to the top of supposed falls from Aaron remains an important place of pilgrimage, in particular for the Bedouin of the surroundings.

Geography

The red solid mass of sandstone culminates with 1.396 meters of altitude, dominating in the west the valley of the Arabah and in the east the basin of Pétra. It is the most important top near the ancient city, and it is easily recognizable with the sight of the étincelant sanctuary which caps its principal top. It offers a point of view considered, in particular on the site of Pétra and the Deir.
