• 1790 : creation of the department of the Puy-de-Dôme with 8 districts: Ambert, Besse, Billom, Clermont-Ferrand, Issoire, Montaigu, Riom, Thiers
• 1800: creation of the districts: Ambert, Clermont-Ferrand, Issoire, Riom, Thiers
• 1926: removal of the district of Ambert
• 1942: restoration of the district of Ambert
