History

  • 1790 : creation of the department of the Low-Rhine with 4 districts: Benfeld, Haguenau, Strasbourg, Wissembourg
  • creation of the district of Saar-Union
  • the district of Benfeld is moved in Schlestadt
  • 1800: creation of the districts: Barr, Saverne, Strasbourg, Wissembourg
  • 1806: the sub-prefecture of Barr is moved with Schlestadt
  • 1871: removal of the department, entirely annexed by Germany
  • 1919: return to France and restoration of the department: Erstein, Haguenau, Molsheim, Saverne, Sélestat, Strasbourg-City, Strasbourg-Countryside, Wissembourg
  • 1974: the districts of Sélestat and Erstein are gathered in the district of Sélestat-Erstein (sub-prefecture with Sélestat)
