History

• 1793 : creation of the department of the Loire with 3 districts: Montbrison, Roanne, Saint-Etienne (the chief town is with Feurs)
• 1795: the chief town of the department is moved of Feurs with Montbrison
• 1800: creation of the districts: Montbrison, Roanne, Saint-Etienne
• 1855: the chief town of the department is moved of Montbrison to Saint-Etienne
