History

1790 : creation of the department of Charente-Lower with 7 districts: Marenne oyster, Montlieu, Pons, Rochefort, La Rochelle, Saint-Jean-with Angély, Holy
- 1800: creation of the districts: Jonzac, Marenne oysters, Rochefort, La Rochelle, Saint-Jean-in Angély, Holy
- 1926: removal of the districts of Marenne oyster and Saint-Jean-with Angély
- 1943: restoration of the district of Saint-Jean-in Angély
In 1941, theLower became Charente-Maritime.
