Districts of Serbia
The districts , in Serb Cyrillic Serb Sr окрузи and in transliterated Sr okruzi, are administrative units of the Serbia. Each district consists of several municipalities.
Definitions
The Slavic word " okrug" (округ) is étymologiquement related to the German word " Kreis" , indicating a " cercle". Literally " okrug" indicate " something which encercle".The various territorial authorities of the République of Serbia are defined by the Law on the organization territorial and the local government, adopted by the Parlement of Serbia, the July 24th 1991 and amended in 1999. In the decree on enforcement of a law of the January 29th 1992, the government of Serbia defines the districts as regional centres of the authority of the State . The Republic of Serbia is thus divided into 29 districts, to which are added the district of the Town of Belgrade.
