District of Pingfang

The district of Pingfang (平房区; Pinyin: Píngfáng Qū) is an administrative subdivision of the province of the Heilongjiang in China. It is one of the districts of the under-provincial city of Harbin.

History

Pingfang sheltered starting from 1936 the Unité 731 , unit military of bacteriological research of the Armée imperial Japanese woman. Officially, this unit directed by Shiro Ishii was devoted “to the prevention of the epidemics and the purification of water”, but it carried out actually research on various diseases like the Peste, the Typhus and the Choléra in order to use them as bacteriological weapons. This unit is sadly famous for the experiments carried out on prisoners, in majority Korean, Chinese and Russian, of which women and children.
