District of Ngorongoro

The district of Ngorongoro is one of the five districts of the area of Arusha in Tanzania.

Localization

It is bordered in north by the Kenya, in the east by the District of Monduli, in the south by the District of Karatu and in the west by the area of Mara. The chief town is located at Loliondo.

Population

According to the national census of 2002, the population of this district is of 129.776 inhabitants. The ethnos group Maasai is majority.

Inside the district, this finds the Cratère of Ngorongoro, with the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. It accommodates part of the migrations of wild animals. Most of the district is regarded besides as belonging to the Serengenti-Mara ecosystem, defined by the limits of the annual migrations.

Zones protected

The southern half of the district is indicated under the name of Aire of conservation of Ngorongoro and is directed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). It is about the only zone of this type in Tanzania, the others being reserves and national parks. The dwellings are authorized inside the protected areas, but agriculture and the breeding are the restriction object. It is allowed to make drink the herds in the Cratère of Ngorongoro, registered with the World heritage by UNESCO, but the human dwelling and the pastures are prohibited there.
