Castle-D' Oex, the “capital”, is the largest territorial commune of the canton, with a surface of 11 ' 374 ha. Their territories are formed mainly by the average part of the valley of the Sarine, like by some side valleys. The Gummfluh is the culminating point of the area.

Until the beginning of the 16th century, the valley belonged to the Counts de Gruyère who, at the time, made set up several priories and churches, of which that of Rougemont (Vaud), always in activity, is one of oldest of Switzerland.

Since 1555 and until 1798, the valley lived under the Bernese domination. One still finds traces of them, like a bear painted inside the church of Rossinière and the very beautiful Large Country cottage, today remains of the family of fire the painter Balthus.

The area primarily made up of mountain pastures, forests and rocks comprises only little industry, the inhabitants of the Country-D' Enhaut live primarily of the mountain and hill farming, tourism and the craft industry.
