District of Broye

The district of Broye is one of the seven districts of the Freiburg in Suisse. The district was created by the cantonal constitution that the canton of Freiburg gave itself on March 19th, 1848.

Geography

The district of Broye is an area strongly cut out within Broye of Vaud. It consists of an adjacent surface to the District of Sarine and three enclaves in the canton of Vaud: Estavayer-the-Lake, Surpierre and Vuissens. Turns, a fourth tiny enclave, belonging to the commune of Montagny, is added to it.

French is the principal language of Broye.

A very small minority still speaks the Patois broyard ( broyao ). The statistics of the census of the population of the year 1990 indicates 169 people.

Government

Estavayer-the-Lake ( all. Stäffis amndt See ) is with 4656 inhabitants the capital and the prefecture of the district. The prefecture is with the Castle of Channels. The services offered are authorizations (signs, lottos, tombolas) and handing-over of license (dogs, drives out, construction, fishing, etc).

Economy

The sector of the services maintains more than 40% employment. With 30% each one, the sectors agricultural and industrial (especially construction, tobacco, electrical engineering and electronics) divides the remainder.

History

A canoe of the Âge of the stone (approx. 6200 before J. - Christ) found to Estavayer-the-Lake testifies to an early colonization of the area. Many discoveries dating from the end of the age of the stone with Portalban let conclude that the man was quickly established in the area.

True centers of manufacture of jewels, weapons (axes, swords), textiles and potteries were discovered with Cheyres, Font, Estavayer-the-Lake, Autavaux, Gletterens and Portalban.

The Celtic and Roman discoveries are also numerous. The name Broye is Celtic: Broye = brogia.

From 500 after J. - Christ the christianization of all the territory is felt. The first churches such as Domdidier, Dompierre-the-Large, Dompierre-the-Small and Turns, are examples.

The consruction of the castles starts about the year thousand. Several castles and ruins testify to this time. Following the wars of Burgundy the influence of Freiburg increases. In 1536 Broye disaggregates in several parts. By the reform, catholic enclaves are formed in the middle of Broye of Vaud.

As from the 16th century of powerful families seize the power (Patriciat). This capacity falls at the time from the French invasion at the beginning of the 19th century.

After the war of Sonderbund (1847), the canton of Freiburg gives itself a new constitution. Broye becomes one of the seven districts and remained in this form so far. March 19th, 1848, the cantonal constitution between into force. It is also the birth of the district of Broye.

The canton of Freiburg promote with the assistance of a bottom fusions. Since 1999 those strongly increased.

Fusions of communes since 1831:

11831 Mannens and Grandsivaz amalgamated. the 1853 name of Mannens was adapted to Mannens-Grandsivaz.
