Distinguished Service Cross-country race (United Kingdom)
The Distinguished Service Cross-country race ( DSC ) is the third higher military decoration decreed with the officers and (since 1993) the warrant officers and men of the row of the Royal Navy and also during a certain time with the officers of the other countries of the the Commonwealth.
The DSC, which can also be received on a purely posthumous basis, is decreed with the personnel of Royal Navy in recognition of their “… courage at the time of active operations against the enemy”.
This reward was created in 1901 as a Conspicuous Service Cross-country race like rewards for the ineligible subalterns and warrant officers for the Distinguished Service Order. It was famous in Distinguished Service Cross-country race in October 1914, the eligibility being extended to all the naval officers in lower part of the row of Lieutenant commander. In 1931, decoration became accessible to the members from the Merchant navy British and in 1940 eligibility was again extended, this time at the personnel of the British Army and the Royal Air Force) being used for edge of a British vessel. Since the revision of the system of decoration of 1993, according to philosophy wanting that one does not make distinction of rank for the rewards for bravery, the Distinguished Service Medal, before third higher distinction for the warrant officer and privates, was suspended. The DSC is from now on the third level of distinction for nobility of action for all the ranks of Royal Navy.
Since 1916, barettes were decreed with the posterior DSC in recognition of act which alone would have deserved the attribution of the reward. The récipendaires are authorized to affix letters DSC with their title and " & Bars" if it is necessary.
