Disneyland Railroad
Disneyland includes/understands a railroad to vapor. At the origin known under the name of Disneyland & Santa Fe Railroad , it was sponsored by the company of railroad Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway . Based on a footing of three feet, most usually used in North America, the railroad is made of a loop continues turning around the park, although there exists a siding bringing to the workshops. All the engines of Disneyland roll to the diesel, which is less polluting and less expensive than coal, wood or the very heavy " C" bunker; gasoline normally used for the engines with vapor.
This train, present as of the first drafts of the project of the Disneyland park takes as a starting point the passion of Walt Disney for the trains and fact following the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, the private miniature train of Walt, and with the Grizzly Flats Railroad of Ward Kimball.
Disneyland Railroad can be comparable with a railroad company which exploits only one line but several trains. It owes its existence with the Carolwood Pacific Railroad and it gave rise to others " compagnies" in the Disney parks:
- Walt Disney World Railroad with the Magic Kingdom
- Disney' S Wildlife Express train with Disney' S Animal Kingdom
- Disney' S Strong Wilderness Railroad closed in 1977
- Western To rivet Railroad with Tokyo Disneyland
- Disneyland Paris Railroad with Disneyland Paris
- HongKong Disneyland Railroad with HongKong Disneyland
The way
The rails use a gauge of Narrow gauge railway of 3 feet 6 inches (1,067 Mr.).With the opening, two trains could be used on the way, run in opposite direction. A way of crossing had been included on the level of the station of Main Street and one of the trains was to await the passage of the other to continue. Later, for safety reasons and in order to be able to use more than two trains, the line was changed so that the trains in normal service traverse the ways in only one direction in the direction of the needles of a watch. The way of crossing was disconnected and is currently used to expose a Draisine to hands. The addition in 1958 of the diorama Large Canyon on 35 Mr., then of Primeval World in 1966 (conceived for the fair of New York 64-65) required a change of rolling stock; instead of facing forwards, the benches of the new flat wagons are turned towards right-hand side so that the diorama can be better appreciated by the passengers. Five opened coaches of observation, covers of open-type screen with seats directed towards before and dating from the opening of the park, were given in service in 2004 after a three years restoration.
Another detail dating from the opening of the park is visible since the railroad. When the train passes behind It' S.A. Small World the attraction of Fantasyland, it crosses an access road which is protected by two miniature signals from crossing called Wigwag. The Santa Fe had offered these signals of crossing life size, but Disney would have refused them because their scale is not proportioned with that of the train. Miniature counterparts were conceived and built by the workshops of San Bernardino of the Santa Fe Railroad like gift for Disneyland. They function with engines of windshield wiper of cars.
In 1969 the installation and the opening of Haunted Mansion in the New Orleans Square led to a minor realignment of the main road because the new building would have encroached on the ballast. Attractions built later all were conceived to prevent that work on the train is not necessary, and do not stop the service. Thus Splash Mountain spans the ways and Indiana Jones Adventure passes below.
The railroad was nevertheless closed between January and March 2005 for three months a complete restoration (including the restoration of the ballast) for the 50 {{E}} birthday of the park. It is the longest closing of the railroad in the history of the park. A ceremony was given the March 17th 2005 for reopening, the addition of the fifth train and a dedication was made with Ollie Johnston.
According to the proper estimates of Disneyland, the trains make more than 13.000 turns around the park per annum.
Engines
The Walt Disney Company built the two original engines in its clean workshops of Burbank under the supervision of Roger E. Broggie. They are conceived according to the Lilly Belle , a miniature steam train that Broggie had made for the Carolwood Pacific Railroad of the garden of Walt. They are reproductions of the traditional style American 4-4-0s " Wild West" , but built on a larger scale of 3/5e.
Two additional engines were bought, because it is currently less expensive than to build news of them and than of many narrow-gauge lines and their equipment resells closed. All accepted a complete restoration before integrating the service in 1958 and 1959, including new boilers.
