Disney\' S Animal Kingdom

Disney' S Animal Kingdom is the response of Disney to the growing success of the animalist parks in Florida such Busch Gardens or SeaWorld. It opened on April 1st 1998 with Walt Disney World Resort in the west of the property, on many marshes, near the forest farm of the field. The park combines the presence of animal truths to the concern of the detail and within the meaning of the tale of Disney. It is largest of the Disney parks of share the world.

The animals evolve/move within a framework recreated with many details, plants acclimatized and often of spaces larger than in any zoo of the world (apart from the zoological reserves). Even disappeared and imaginary animals are envisaged in the park. Currently only the dinosaurs are visible in Dinoland the USA.

The project

Because of the success of many zoological gardens in Florida and traditional attraction Jungle Cruise, Michael Eisner decided in 1994 that Disney was to have its animalist park. The June 20th 1995, Michael Eisner announced the creation of the park Disney' S Animal Kingdom . Construction started in September 1995 with the earthwork of the 200 ha of the site in the western zone of Walt Disney World.

In the beginning the park was to be divided into three sections: disappeared live animals, animals (dinosaurs, etc) and mythical animals (dragons, unicorns, etc):

  • the section of the live animals was to present a safari with mainly African animal truths. This part received the support and the assistance of the American association of the zoos and aquariums.
  • the section of the extinct animals was to allow a voyage the Crétacé thanks to the audio-animatronics very last things.
  • the section of the mythical animals was to be called Beastlie Kingdom , and to contain a Russian mountain in the cave of a dragon, a fantastic labyrinth with unicorns and a mytholoqic cruising. It was to be located at the place of current the Camp Minnie-Mickey country " temporaire". The projects of this zone were pushed back because of the thin budget planned for the park, only four countries out of five were budgeted for. Although Disney' S Animal Kingdom does not contain any attraction on the mythical animals, the topic always exists on the logo of the park (which contains a dragon) and on the carpark (the section unicorn). Sound effects of dragon and sometimes of the fireballs emanates from a statue hidden behind the trees near the driving bridge with Camp Minnie-Mickey, the statue is visible since the boats circulating around Discovery Island .

The development cost for this park is estimated at more than 800 million $.

The park with topic

The park is cut out in 5 countries, on a surface of more than 200 ha. It takes again to him also the radial plane inaugurated by Disneyland. Since the entry one joined an island Discovery Island with a gigantic tree of which leave the bridges towards the other countries of the park. No train makes the turn of the park. There exists a way of railroad in order to connect the center of the park to the animal nursery located at the fine bottom of the park.

From Discovery Island, it is possible to join one of the two countries located on both sides of the entry but inaccessible besides these bridges, Dinoland the USA and Camp Minnie-Mickey. Behind the tree of life two other bridges bring either in Africa or in Asia. The way of railroad makes it possible to separate them. These two parts seem to have the same size but a big space of almost 25 ha is available behind the Asia.

Discovery Island/The Oasis

The Oasis is the entry of the park with on the left enormous a Rainforest Cafe, accessible since outside like interior. This restaurant is built under a large water cascade. Volcanos, simulations of flashes and animals (robots) thématisent the interior.

Then after the counters, the visitors traverse the many ways of the oasis decorated of brooks, falls of water, flora and fauna tropical ( The Oasis Exhibits ) in order to join the bridge bringing to the central island, Discovery Island which is to some extent inhabited. She was baptized like the old island on Bay Lake. The Safari Village is the central part of the park and is used at the same time of hub and Main Street . He proposes an immense pizzeria and a barbecue, shops and attractions. The river around the island is traversed by ferries (rather of small high-speed motorboats) connecting the various countries of the park.

In the middle of the island, there is the symbol of the park, the Arbre of life (Tree off Life a giant subspecies of Disneyodendron ), with the hollow of which a cinema in 3D accommodates the characters of 1001 Legs (has Bug' S Life) in It' S Tough to Be has Bug! attraction already present in the Californian park.

Around the island, Discovery Island Trail is a way which makes it possible to discover several animal species and vegetable as well as the many overlapping sculptures the ones with the others on the trunk and the roots of the giant tree, Tree off Life .

Africa

The Kilimanjaro Safari , immense reconstituted safari, is the principal attraction of this " pays". It is the greatest attraction of Disney and one longest. Animal truths live in semi-freedom in this savanna.

From Discovery Island , the bridge located on the left behind the pleasing Tree of Life at a African village Harambe which accommodates shops. At the end of this village of bush, a big space is the starting point of the Kilimanjaro Safari .

At side, it is possible to join a pedestrian course in edge of savanna called Pangani Forest Trail . Certain animals, which would be hidden too much, are presented in large " cages" with the very neat decoration. The principal pride of the originators of the park was the quality of the reconstitution of the environment of the animals.

A station makes it possible to join in railroad (expensive system with Walt Disney) the Rafiki' S Planet Watch.

It is possible to prolong the environment of the place while remaining with the Disney' S Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Asia

The part on Asia opened only in March 1999, nearly one year after the remainder of the park. It is located on the right after the bridge behind the Tree of Life. It occupies only one third of that envisaged at the origin because of budgetary cuts. It is especially cruising in the jungle which was reduced. The majority of attractions open in this country are animated enough.

The visitor arrives in a village of Nepalese and Indochinese inspiration. Just at the entry of the village a theater accommodates spectacles of falconers and others " dompteurs" raptors. Some shops and restaurants accommodate the visitors in voluntarily partly dilapidated buildings and including/understanding an enormous quantity of details " exotiques". A place makes it possible to go in the two attractions built in first.

The first is a pedestrian course, Maharajah Jungle Trek , in the middle of Asian ruins inhabited by animals of the jungle of Indo-China in decorations (them also) very elaborate. One can see there tigers, bat giants or monkeys.

Flights off Wonders is a spectacle of raising of bird presented to the Caravan Stage , amphitheater of outdoor.

Then a fast river opened little time afterwards: Kali To rivet Rapids . It is a simple attraction of buoy traversing a river with many the rapids, the whole in an Asian decoration of jungle. Some showed Disney to copy existing attractions and not to innovate, it is however true that the concern of the detail of Disney differentiates this attraction from the others of the same type.

Along the lake, on the way of Dinoland the USA, rises the mountain traversed by a train of Expedition Everest , attraction open since January 2006. It is more the Russian high mountain of Disney. With the image of the Russian high mountains of Disney (except California Screamin' with Disney' S California Adventure), the decoration is a " vraie" mountain, here it is the Everest, inhabited by the yéti. The visitor embarks on or train which after a rise, descends the slopes and caves of the mountain to the image of those of the Nepal Chile.

Rafiki' S Planet Watch

From the station located in the " pays" Africa, the train Disney' S Wildlife Express makes it possible to join the animal nursery which is also used of private clinic and exposure on the safeguarding of the species.

The exposure contains a film whose hero is Rafiki, the erudite and a little insane baboon of the King Lion.

Just behind the building one can see part of the zone of convalescence and maternity for the large animals (elephants, gazelles,…)

Dinoland, the USA

It is the celebration of America, one of the countries where paleontology exploded thanks to many fields of fossils. Enormous McDonalds is at the entry of this sponsored zone by the giant of fast-food industry.

Principal attraction is Dinosaur , a voyage in the prehistory of the Crétacé. Attraction was called Countdown to Extinction before being renamed in May 2001 according to film of Disney Dinosaure. It uses same technology as the Indiana Jones Adventure: The Temple off the Forbidden Eye, of the cars in 12 places in a decoration of audio-animatronics.

Cretaceous Trail is a shaded walk evoking the fauna and the flora of the Crétacé period.

The Boneyard (field of bone) is a zone of leisures for children with toboggans but also a ditch of excavation of " fossiles".

The spectacle Tarzan' S Rocks lodged in the theater of Theater In The Wild (1700 places) along the lake must be removed in 2005 to leave to HongKong Disneyland. The spectacle was replaced by Finding Nemo - The Musical.

Of May at July 2005, Lucky, a dinosaur audio-animatronic, autonomous was visible in this zone. It then left to HongKong Disneyland in July 2005, to return to Florida later.

Of 1998 with 2001 the park accommodated the jubilee of the dinosaurs with the fossil truths lent by a museum. The house was destroyed to be replaced by Dino-Rowed.

Dino-rowed

In order to start again the park, several attractions were added on November 28th, 2001 and were joined together to simulate a fun fair built at the edge of a road on an old carpark. The shop Chester & Hester' S Dinosaur Treasures is at the base of the concept of this zone sometimes so called Chester & Hester' S Dino-Rowed .

Dino-rowed was criticized by many fans of Disney: the fact of buying attractions and of equipping them to be Disney, indicates a lack of imagination; plays of arcade were even open in this zone. It was one of works of the period Pressler.

Between May and July 2005, a dinosaur named mobile Lucky first audio-animatronic was presented to the public before being sent to HongKong Disneyland.

Minnie-Mickey camp

This part was built in order to fill empty space left for budgetary reasons by what should have been a country on the mythical animals (from where the dragon in the logo of the park).

One can currently count two theaters and a zone of several houses. The most distant theater towards the left presents a traditional spectacle on Pocahontas while largest on the right to a more innovating spectacle on the King Lion proposes, Festival off the Lion King.

Others facts

The hotel Disney' S Animal Kingdom Lodge located near the park in no manner is connected to the park. The hotel has its own reserve of animals which for reasons of comfort (especially the reduction of the stress) passes from the zone of the park to that of the hotel.

Future of the park

  • Actuellement a great zone behind the Asia is unutilised. A project on Australia seems most promising but nothing corroborates it.

  • the zone of Camp Minnie-Mickey was to be temporary (open in 1998) and would also make it possible to increase the park. It uses the space of a project put on standby the Beastly Kingdom .
include has stand-up dragon-themed roller coaster - " Dare the Dragon" , and has refines - " Quest for the Unicorn". -->
  • Apart from these two big spaces of many places is free, for example between Harambe and the village of the Asia or along the railway.
