Disco music
The disco music is a Musical genre and a Danse appeared at the beginning of the Années 1970.
Definition
The music disco music is the result of a mixture of Funk, of Soul, pop and of Latin-American music, enriched by new instruments, the Synthétiseur S. the music disco music, in the beginning in any case, is characterized by a binary rate/rhythm very involving (around 120/130 beats per minute), hammered by the large case at each time of the measurement 4/4, ideal for Danse R. Très often the hitches are marked by the Charleston and the clear Caisse mark times 2 and 4.
History
With the beginning of the year 1960, the disco music was born from a stylization of the sound of Philadelphia adapted to the white market (three-quarters of the market in the United States), and to a novel mode of life, that of the Discothèque S. It is with New York and Miami in Discothèque and thanks to the radios that the Disco music starts and triumphs. Then groups like Smart or Village People will occur on large scenes, with the image of the artists Rock and Funk which preceded them.
The birth of the proto-disco music rather takes place in 1973 with “Love' S Theme”, piece not-sung of the Love Unlimited Orchestra (nº1). This same year also leaves “Drunk Makossa” Manu Dibango. In 1974 three titles make date: “Rock'n'roll Your Baby” of George McCrae, “Rock'n'roll The Boat” of The Hoot Corporation and especially “Never Can Say Goodbye” of Gloria Gaynor. In their wake one finds “You' Re The First, My Last, My Everything” of Barry White and “Doctor' S Orders” of Carol Douglas. Also the key character of the remixor appears as Tom Moulton which remixé thousands of titles and which is at the origin of several innovations like the lengthened version and the songs mixed uninterrupted (what it did with “Honey Bee”, “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “Reach Out I' L Be There” on the first album of Gaynor). This also led it to create the format of the “12" individual”, maximum 45 turns or maximum 33 turns.
In 1975 the disco music bites still a little more in the classifications especially thanks to Donna Summer (“Love To Love You Baby”), KC and the Sunshine Band (“That' S The Way (I Like It)”) and Van McCoy (“The Hustle”). Gloria Gaynor continues its rise and is crowned queen of the discotheques while the Trammps become a sure value in the world of the underground. 1975 are also the year of “Jive talkin'”, first hit of the relookés Bee Gees and the groups of studio like Silver Convention (“Fly Robin Fly”). As from 1976, the disco music belongs to the landscape, without still dissociating R&B completely, especially that the Motown starts to make irruption on the market of the 12". In 1977, this tendency R&B, in which newcomers fit as Chic is supplemented by a massive appearance of the electronic disco music whose best example is “I feel coils” Donna Summer. Finally the disco music will know an explosion without precedent in the history of the music with the film Saturday Night Fever played for the first time on December 14th, 1977 (classified 24 weeks with the signal with more than 25 million sales and 15 million for its continuation Grease). This immense success will make besides year 1978 the year when all the records as regards record sales were beaten. At that time, the discotheques are integrated in a lifestyle, which will spread thereafter with all the layers of the company.
The success of the disco music is such as, very quickly, of the singers and of the singers of drunk person installed already well, followed soon new arrivals are tested there. At the end of the years 1970, almost all the interpreters of drunk person put themselves at the disco music and some manage to combine the two styles without losing their identity. It is in all the cases a fusion which misses neither of interest nor of personality, particularly at Philadelphia International Records, the recording company which, by enracinant the disco music in the R&B, is that with which all started. The other label of discs which perhaps best made a success of this fusion is the Motown, in spite of a success hardly more than episodical, with the liking of the stars and discs.
The disco music is then the music of mass, vilified by the amateurs of rock'n'roll and the Blacks fans of “pure and hard” R&B. It is also a music of défoulement in this crisis period of energy and of moroseness, in the Western countries which call in question all their system of values. This music remains however in the line of the dispute of the years 1970, under a surface cover which she asserts. Its favorite topics are sexuality - much suggestivement expressed than before-and, the life the night. One of the great assertions of the disco music is the androgyny in the style, as in the voices, the such pâmées voices of the Bee Gees. They are often characters within the meaning of the spectacle and of derision affirmed, having the genius of the disguise and affirming a bad taste seeing very assumed, since Amii Stewart pharaonne emplumée with Village People and its multiple caricatures of the North-American macho while passing by Donna Summer faint on a crescent of the moon and the women of the group Boney M in linen room sexy, or connected with a macho triumphing, creatures of the waves to the feet of Neptune or ready slightly vêtues with a space voyage, without speaking about the mystics Earth, Wind & Fire with the legs of elephant gilded over bottom of Egypt passed to the computer, of Cerrone and of its naked mannequin on a refrigerator or many hairy chests of the various exhibées interpreters proudly. This merry exubérance is opposed then to a morose rock'n'roll. The disco music is also the occasion for the nonanglophone world to make irruption on the market with productions with success: Italy (Peter Jacques Band, Revenge, Macho.), France (Théo Vaness, Santa Esmeralda, Sheila B. Devotion, Patrick Juvet, Cerrone.), Germany (Gave Summer, Claudja Barry, Eruption, Boney M…), but also the Benelux countries (Patrick Hernandez, Luv'…) and others still like Quebec (France Pretty, MTL Express train.). Some go even from country in country as Amii Stewart which goes from the United Kingdom to Italy while passing by France. The success of the disco music will be such as same rockers like the Rolling Stones with “Miss you”, KIS with " I Was Made For Lovin' You" or Rod Stewart with its famous “Da ya think I' m sexy” will touch at this rate/rhythm, considered by their fans as “the great Satan”. And Blondie with " groups it; Heart off glass" one of greatest success on the radios and out of box with most extremely of vagueness.
To note the significant role that Europeans in this music like Cerrone will play, the artitisque realizer Giorgio Moroder (artitisque realizer of Donna Summer inter alia), Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo (realizers artitisques of the Village People) or Frank Farian (artitisque realizer of Boney M). French-speaking artists (at the origin) such as Patrick Hernandez and Patrick Juvet will know an international success.
Chronologically, it is a type of music which extends approximately from the first crisis of oil to the appearance of the AIDS. the kind decreased as much for internal causes as external. First of all the offer on the market became such as one arrived at saturation, with in more one abusive repetition of the specific artifices to this music: 1979 mark the top of the kind here - all the world or almost wants to make disco music. But it is also the apogee of campaigns anti-disco music (“disco music sucks”) like the auto-da-fe of July 12th, 1979 in Comiskey Park of Chicago having degenerated into riot, revenge of the United States against the women and the blacks whose role was essential in the world of the disco music. There was also on behalf of certain interpreters of the discs moving away from the original groundwork: 1979 are the year of Bad Girls of Gave Summer, a LP having a cast towards a sound plus rock'n'roll, or of “No More Tears”, duet very international variety which it made with Barbra Streisand. It is also the year when Michael Jackson receives its first gold disc, on November 29th, thanks to the hit “Don' T stop' til ya get enough”, which while remaining very disco music is innovator. And finally it is the moment when Motown, which had approximately missed the train by the disco music (in spite of some large hits as “hangover” Diana Ross Coils and “Don' T Leave Me This Way” of Thelma Houston in 1976 or “Heaven Must Have Feels You” Bonnie Pointer in 1979), awakes with inter alia a Diana Ross which launches “Upside Down” in 1980, number 1 having nothing to do with the years 1970. The external causes of disaffection partial of the public are new morals reaganienne, lowers it by audience of the discotheques and the appearance of the AIDS. Another cause is the psychological change of decade which involved a renewal of the formulas of certain radios. They in that were encouraged by the companies which, disappointed by the fall of their profits in 1979, had reduced their investments as regards disco music.
Although the Disco music is declared died in 1980 in all the American press (" Disco music is dead"), the kind will evolve to the Hi-NRG (prevalence of the synthetizers, of the name of a song of Evelyn Thomas of 1983) in the Années 1980, then towards the House (entirely electronic version). It will also influence the New wave and thepop one of the beginning of the year 1980 (Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Bronski Beat) with a mixture of disco music for the rate/rhythm and Punk for environment. The disco music will influence especially all the music Dance, House, Techno and Electro, but also all the Hip-Hop and the Funk (Urban) of the years 1980.
As from 1987, the funk (Urban) is replaced by the “house music”, second reading of the disco music, which will involve a redécouverte music of dance of the years 1970. This redécouverte was helped by a purely commercial phenomenon which is the republication of the titles disco music out of compact disk, in the form of albums or of compilations. Accompanied by “megamixes”, pot-rotted remixés, it will make the fortune of Boney M or the Village People which remake surface in 1988-1989. The disco music appears then in this end of the year 1980 - and more still at the time of the following decade like the music of a convivial golden age without AIDS nor invading synthetizers. Certain singers as Loleatta Holloway will have even more success in the years 1980-90 qu ' it of, had stimulated before by the fashion of the Remix, multiplication ad infinitum of pseudo-news versions of their hits. The remix, phenomenon timidly appeared about 1982-1984, more largely about 1986-1987, becomes even the essential component of the market of the music of dance. One notices also the appearance of “new songs” which are only more or less worked over again remainders of old titles (phenomenon of the sampling, the “sampling”, whose precursor is the Rap “Rapper' S delight” of 1979). To the remix and the sampling become kings the recoveries made by the singers of origin are added: Gloria Gaynor rechante “I Will Survives”, Thelma Houston “Don' T Leave Me This Way” and the Sister Sledge “We Are Family”, “Lost In music” and “He' S The Greatest Dancer”. The recoveries are also a pledge of success for an unknown: Jimmy Somerville must much with “I Feel Coils”, “Don' T Leave Me This Way”, “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “You Make Me Feel”, Take That in “Could It Be Magic”, “Relight My Fire” and “How Deep Is Your Love”, Kym Mazelle in “Was That All It Was” and “Young Hearts Run Free”. A judicious recovery can even revitalize a career, like made Diana Ross with “I Will Survive”. For the public, it is a puff of fresh air. This one in redemande still and still.
The Années 2000 will in general mark the revival of the kind with an renewed interest of part of the population for the music of the years 1970-1980. Some speak even about the " renaissance" disco music. That pushes the recording companies to remake compilations and even remixs larger tubes of the kind but also of the less known pieces. Again disco music kinds appear in XXIe century, like the Disco Electro and the Disco House. There also exists in new ways of living on this music (in particular at home, in particular thanks to Internet, with the Webradio S, the musical Loft S or even thanks to the " fashion; aqua "). Nowadays, the music disco music thus always is very appreciated the nostalgic ones of the kind, but also by the new generation. The tubes disco music are diffused and/or remixés by DJs at the time of special evenings and are always diffused in Discothèque and on many radios Friday and Saturday evening.
At our time, many artists perpetuate the kind Disco music-Funk. Among them, one finds Gnarls Barkley with his tube of 2006, " Crazy" , Irene Cara and " Forever My Love" (2006), the Scissors Sisters, mythical the Madonna and her titles pop disco music " Hung Up" (samplant " skilfully; Gimme! Gimme! (Man After Midnignt has)), and " Sorry" , Suzanne Micrometer caliper with " Free My Love" (2007), Oliver Cheatham and " Saturday Night" (2007) and obviously Mika and is title " Relax" (2007), which mixes pop and disco music.
Origin
From 1964, the " term; disco" appears in the United States and in the Anglo-Saxon countries like abbreviation of the word " discotheque" (in French: Discotheque or " box of nuit"). " This night we go to the disco music " : This night one goes out of box. In 1975 it is used to indicate a kind of music and dance. The pioneers were the artistic realizers Gamble & Huff and them Philly Sound, like Barry White.
Instrumentation
The artistic realizers of disco music of years 1970 use instruments of their time. Its disco music is often associated with rhythmic low/battery put very ahead in the mix (often even stronger than the voice), with arrangements of violins and coppers with expressions linear in the unison or played in the bridges ( wire ), and with the voices with much of echo effects and of Reverb.
-
the rhythmic part, put very ahead, consists of a Latin battery and percussions, congas, timpani but also of electronic batteries or Boîte at rates/rhythms ( I Feel Coils Donna Summer) which support more the rate/rhythm furnace-one-tea-floor . Each time of the 4/4 is proposed by the foot of large case, a charley mark the hitches and a charley open over time off . The large case is mixed very strong in volume.
-
the low one is played often in a syncopated way while exploiting the octaves, it can be replaced by basic sounds of Synthétiseur S electronic (ex: Moog).
-
the guitar is generally rhythmic, in a style funky chicken-scratch , with effects like the Wah-wah or the Phaser, weak times can accentuated beings.
-
the piano and/or of the electroacoustic keyboards, very with the mode in the years 1970, like the Fender Rhodos, the Wurlitzer and the Hohner Clavinet, ensure the accompaniment.
-
Of arrangements is carried out with whole with cords (violins, violoncellos…). Another string instrument is found on many disco music productions, the toothing-stone ( I Will Survive of Gloria Gaynor).
-
Of the whole of coppers, trumpets, trombones, saxophones and other instruments wind like the clarinet, the piccolo, the flute and others are frequent also.
-
At the end of the years 1970, one starts to hear Synthétiseur S which will gradually replace arrangements of cords and coppers during the years 1980.
