Marignier is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Savoie and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

Marignier is a city located in the low valley of Arve, it is located at the foot of the Mole to the junction of Arve and Giffre right in the middle of the department halfway between Cluses and Bonneville. The inhabitants are Margnerots. The communes bordering are Ayze and Saint-Jeoire in the west, Mieussy in north, Thyez in the east and Vougy in the south. The communal territory is divided between the plain and the slopes in particular that of the Mole. The altitude of the east city of 475m but the culminating point (the Mole) reached 1863m.

History

Known under the name of Marinicum with the Middle Ages, the city would have been created by a knight of return of the crusades. This would explain the presence of the crescent of the moon on the blazon of the city. Not required passage to cross Giffre by the " old man pont" (1788), Marignier takes importance during the establishment of the railway line leading to Chamonix. It is in particular equipped with the telegraph and becomes one of the most important cities of the valley. With the industrial revolution, the city obtains an iron and steel big industry with the factory of Giffre which will close its door only in the years 1990. As the remainder of the valley of Arve, industries of undercutting develop after the war and settle in the city.

Tourist monuments and places

The bell of the church is a bell with bulb of the 18th century, typical of Savoyard architecture. It was renovated at the end of the years 1990. The old bridge (1788) was the only point of passage on Giffre until the arrival of the train at the 19th century. There exists in Marignier several footpaths on the Mole for example and a splendid point of view with the place known as " granges" on all the valley of Arve and Mont Blanc.
