Dirty South

The Dirty South (term, which would have been pronounced and invented for the first time by Outkast in their first album) a sub-genus of the rap, come from the South of the USA (Georgia, Texas, Florida, Tennessee,…).

It is a style which, as opposed to what much believes, was not born with the sound from Lil' Jon, but is old of more than one decade.

It succeeded in developing a clean identity, very different from the two great styles of rap which are the Rap West Coast and the Rap East Coast.

It reflects the " culture" south of the United States: clubs of striptease of Atlanta (the sound dirty south is mainly intended for the dancefloor) until the blues (that David Banner, inter alia, mixture with its rap).

Very many clips Dirty South propose an imagery of the easily recognizable South (Grillz, Sizzurp, chalice, cars modified, black and poor cities of countryside,…).

DJ Screw (RIP) is the inventor of a practice today very widespread in the sound of the South which consists in creating Remix of songs dirty south by slowing down them (" chopped and screwed "). According to some this type of its was creates under the effect of the sizzurp (drink which consists of a mixture of cough mixture and alcohol or fruit juice).

Its Dirty South is very difficult to characterize, because it includes/understands many sub-genera. However, one can define some elements which often return in this type of rap: the very artificial battery of the Crunk, the accent Southerner, the flow nonchalants (Lil Flip, Paul Wall,…) or howled (Pastor Troy, David Banner, Lil Jon,…), the lengthened syllables, coppers, a certain style of song (such as one can hear it on certain songs of Outkast),…

The rap Southerner contains now leaders like Scarface and its group of Geto Boys for the town of Houston, Master P and its brothers (Silkk the Shocker & C-Murder) of TRU with the artists of Cash Money Records (Juvenile, B.G. , Turk, Lil Wayne, Big Tymers) for La Nouvelle-Orléans, and lately Ludacris, T.I, Young Jeezy for Atlanta, Chamillionaire for Texas.

Certain purists of the rap very ardently criticize this sound of the South for its very stripped sonorities and its lyrics believed.

The " Crunk " (born in Memphis) is a sub-genus of the sub-genus of Dirty South, just as Bounce Music in Orleans News and Trap Music with Atlanta.

In France

In French Rap, Dirty South is rather connected with a category of songs being windy the merits and the particular characteristics of its district. For example, the artists like Mac Tyer de Tandem, Booba or the Long pitchfork leave many sounds known as " Dirty South" 93 for Tyer, 92 for B20 and 78 for the Long pitchfork. In this case there, Dirty South is not identified any more thanks to one instrumental style or of the particular lyrics but rather thanks to contents " chauvin" if one can say who makes promotion and praises the merits of a district, suburbs or a department.
