Historically, the word is derived from dirhem, itself coming from the name of the Greek currency: the Drachma. It is this last currency which initially was simply enriched by some Arab words, then towards the end of 7th century, the coin was transformed into Islamic currency with religious quotation and name of the sovereign. The dirham was struck in many Mediterranean countries, including in Al-Andalus, which explains why it could be used as currency in Europe between and 12th centuries.

Simple: Dirham
