Director of the photography

the director of the photography , also called operator chief of catch of sights, is the responsible person, with the turning of a film, catch of sights. It coordinates the efforts of three teams: Camera, Machinery and light or lighting.

Originator of the image of film, it conceives the esthetics of lighting and is thus an essential collaborator of the setting in scene, from his contribution with the figure of film. When it is devoted only to lighting, and that a cameraman operates the camera and ensures the framework, it directs the team of electrician-lighting engineers, which places, under its orders, the projectors and accessories. It can sometimes assume the Cadre and the Lumière.

With the finalization of film, in Post-production, it supervises the calibration images of film.

In France, the French Association of the directors of the cinematographic photography (AFC) gathers a certain number of directors of the photography of cinema (like the ASC in the United States, or the BSC in the United Kingdom). The formation with these trades is taught, in France, with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure Louis Lumière and the Fémis and is accessible, in evolution of career, with the holders of a BTS Audiovisuel option Image, whose course nevertheless is mainly centered on the trades of television (cameraman, video assistant, engineer vision…). There also exists of many private schools, and since many years, the French students also will seek a formation in the Belgian schools such as the higher National institute of the performing arts (INSAS), or the Institut of arts of diffusion (IAD).
