Direction interdépartementale of the Roads

The direction interdépartementale of the Roads (DIR) is, in France, a service decentralized of the Ministère of Ecology, Development and Installation durable, created by decree 2006-304 of March 16th, 2006. The law “Freedoms and responsibilities local” of August 13rd, 2004 transferred to the departments part of the existing trunk roads. The road field of the State is composed from now on of 8000 km not-conceded highways and 11.800 km trunk roads. The directions interdépartementales of the roads ensure maintenance, the exploitation and the management of these roads, mission which was hitherto ensured by the departmental managements of the equipment.
