History
This party results from a scission of the Parti the democratic left (Slovakia) (Strana demokratickej ľavice, SDĽ) in 1999 (Robert Fico being the most popular member of the SDĽ at that time) and quickly became one of the principal parties of Slovakia, while the base of the SDĽ, successor of the Communist party of Slovakia (of before 1990) and recipient of the government of 1998 to 2002, declined regularly.In 2004, the SMER was the third party at the National council of the Slovak Republic, with 25 of its 150 seats. At the beginning of 2005, it was at the head of the opinion polls with 30% of support.
At January 1st 2005, Smer amalgamated with these small parts of left:
- Left the democratic left (see above);
- Alternate social democrat (Sociálnodemokratická alternatíva, small modernistic social democrat party, him even resulting from a scission of the posterior SDĽ to that of the SMER);
- Left social democrat Slovak (Sociálnodemokratická strana Slovenska, founded in 1990, under the direction of Alexander Dubček).
