Diospyros minimifolia
Diospyros minimifolia is a species of the family of the Ebenaceae . She is endemic in New Caledonia. She belongs to the same family as the ebony S, trees known for her hard and black wood. The specific name minimifolia comes owing to the fact that the species has small sheets.
Description
This beautiful tree has ramified branches, very fine, bulky, laid out all around the tree in plate. Its trunk is very right. It measures 4 meters in general, but can measure, when the conditions are favorable for him, up to 15 meters in height, with a trunk of 30cm of diameter. Its bark is black and smooth, and makes it possible to quickly identify this tree in a dry forest.
The sheets are small (1,5cm maximum length), of round form, color dark green top and green clearly below. They are luisantes, fine but very coriaces. The vein is not very apparent. The sheets are slightly bent on the side, like spoons. The sheets are always laid out on the branches so that they are turned towards the sky.
The tree carries male flowers and female flowers. They are unimportant, of color gray and hairy. They measure approximately 0,5cm length.
Reproduction
The fruits resemble great covers of fine hairs and yellow color with clear chestnut. They measure 1cm length approximately. The fruit “is posed” on the sepal of the flower faded. The growth of this tree is very slow. Germination is badly known.
Place in the forest dries of New Caledonia
This tree pushes only in the forests dry. One finds it in the area of Poya/Pouembout, on almost the islands of Bowsprit and Mountains, towards Moindou, but not around Noumea. One N does not find it with the top of 70m of altitude. This beautiful tree which could be exploited like plants decorative presents the disadvantage of pushing very slowly. He prefers the rather plane zones, very dry, but does not have preferably on the type of ground.
