Dion Cassius , in Latin Cassius Dio Cocceianus (Nicée, Bithynie, v. 155 - id., after 235) was a Roman historian of Greek expression .

Biography

Resulting from a senatorial big family, it was wire of Cassius Apronianus (consul in 191) and went down by his/her mother from Dion from Prussia.

It occupied highest employment, was senator under Commode, Préteur under Pertinax, consul under Alexandre Sévère (229), governor in Asia Mineure and Africa. It renonça with the businesses towards 235 and was withdrawn in Nicée to devote itself to it to the study.

Work

Among the works allotted to Dion Cassius three are probably not him:

1° a history of the reign of Trajan, quoted by the Welded: Reimar looks it like a writing of Dion Chrysostome, maternal grandfather of our historian, contemporary and friend of this emperor.

2° One entitled book Persica , mentioned by Welded, but which appears to be the work of Dinon, often quoted as historian of Persia.

3° Another, having for title Getica : it is question in Jornandès, Suidas and Fréculphe. Philostrate allots it to Dion Chrysostome.

The five following belongs to him:

1° a biography of the Arrien philosopher quoted by Suidas, which did not reach us.

2° an account of its voyages, Enodia , whose same lexicographer makes mention, but also lost.

3° a writing on the wonders and the dreams which announced the advent of Septime Sévère to the empire: it is lost.

4° history of Convenient: it was inserted later in the general history of Rome. We have only the summary of Xiphilin.

5° general history of Rome since primitive times until the reign of Alexandre Sévère. It was composed of 80 books: time us charmed several of them. The most complete part is that which starts with book XXXVII and finishes with the LIX included. There remain only fragments of the first 36 books: for books LXI with LXXX, we have only the summary of Xiphilin and some fragments.

Jacopo Morelli found some fragments of books LVC and LVI (Bassano, 1798).

Into 1542, Claude Deroziers represents the Italian translation given by Nicolas Leonicene: Dion Greek historian of the faicts and distinguished gestures of the Romans…, firstly translated of Italian Greek, by Lord Nicolas Leonicene,… and since, of Italian as a vulgar François , Paris, for Arnoul and Charles Angelier.

Editions since the end of the XIXe century

Today still the base of work on Dion remains the complete critical edition that gave some in 1898 U.P. Boissevain. It is mainly starting from this text that was carried out the edition and the English translation in the Loeb collection, by E. Cary.
