The diocese of Saint-Dié is a district of the Roman Catholic church in France. It is a Diocèse French created in 1777, coinciding today with the department of the the Vosges. Since January 1st 2000, it comprises 53 parishes divided into 12 deaneries and 4 zones.

History

Following the loss of the three évêchés Lorraine " put under tutelle" France in 1552, the question is posed, as of the Concile of Thirty, to create the new ones évêchés within the Duché of Lorraine, to free itself from any dependence with respect to France. Also, the dukes Charles III, then Charles IV and finally Léopold Ier did not spare their efforts in order to create these new évêchés, properly Lorraine. In spite of the support of Rome in 1717, the Lorraine project ran up against the very firm French opposition which obliged the Pope to go into reverse and was created only, sixty years later, the évêché of Saint-Dié , also called Fourth Évêché (cf Three bishoprices).

In 1717, the duke Léopold Ier of Lorraine proposes the creation of one évêché downtown of Saint-Dié. The basic idea being that although pertaining to the Duchy of Lorraine, Saint-Dié did not depend on any Trois-évéchés, the creation of évêché will end only 60 years later, well after the death of Léopold, but also after the integration of the Duché of Lorraine in France (1766). The évêché of Nancy-Toul as for him was created in 1778, because of the transfer of évéché of Toul towards Nancy. Évêché of Saint-Dié was attached besides to that of Nancy in 1802 then was restored in 1823.

The seat of évêché was transferred to Épinal, city more central, without the heading being corrected and without this city not having a cathedral.
