Diocese of Nanterre

The Diocèse of Nanterre (or according to its Latin name Dioecesis Nemptodurensis ) is the Diocèse of the Catholic church covering the department of the Hauts-de-Seine.

The diocese of Nanterre depends on the ecclesiastical Province of Paris.

History of the diocese

The diocese was created the October 9th 1966 by Paul VI starting from territories which depended previously on the dioceses of Paris (for the major part of its territory) and of Versailles (territory corresponding to the 9 following communes: Chaville, Garches, Marnes-the-Vain, Meudon, Rueil-Malmaison, Saint-Cloud, Sevres, Vaucresson and City-in Avray). The Episcopal see of the diocese is localized with Nanterre. This new diocese corresponds to the creation of the new department of the Hauts-de-Seine on January 1st 1968, pursuant to the law of the July 10th 1964, in accordance with the decree on enforcement of a law of the February 25th 1965.

The church Holy-Genevieve-and-Saint-Maurice of Nanterre became Cathédrale with the creation of the Diocèse in 1966.

Saints of the diocese

  • Holy Genevieve: born with Nanterre towards 420, it is the holy owner of the diocese.

  • Holy Clodoald or Holy Cloud (520-560): grandson of Clovis and Holy Clotilde, heir to the throne after the massacre of his older brothers by his uncles, it gives up the crown and he becomes monk on a hill close to Paris, become the town of Saint-Cloud.
  • Happy Isabelle de France (1225-1270): sister of Saint Louis, Clarisse, it was abbess of Longchamp (currently on the territory of the commune of Boulogne-Billancourt).
  • Holy Vincent of Paul (1581-1660): it was cleaned of Clichy. He was chaplain of the queen Margot, wife of Henri IV, and in 1617, he founded the Company of the Girls of Charity with holy Louise de Marillac.

  • Mgr Jacques Delarue †, 1st bishop of Nanterre: named on October 9th, 1966, ordered bishop on November 20th, 1966, installed on November 27th, 1966 - deceased on August 23rd, 1982

  • Mgr François Favreau, 2nd bishop of Nanterre: named on September 10th, 1983, installed on November 27th, 1983 - September 22nd, 2002 (resignation for health reasons), highly skilled bishop of Nanterre since September 22nd, 2002
  • Mgr Gerard Daucourt, 3rd bishop of Nanterre: named on June 18th, 2002, installed on September 22nd, 2002
