Dimitri Mitropoulos
Dimitri (Dimitris or Dmitri) Mitropoulos (in) is a Leader, Pianiste and Greek Compositeur , naturalized American in 1946, born the February 18th 1896 with Athens and died the November 2nd 1960 with Milan.
It is with Maria Callas, the traditional musician most important resulting from its country at the 20th century. It passed the essence of its career to the the United States.
Biography
Very early, it shows gifts for the music as of childhood. Its first compositions, whose sonata for violin and piano (lost), date from adolescence.He studies the music with the Conservatoire of Athens, then with Brussels and Berlin, with in particular Ferruccio Busoni as professor. Of 1921 with 1925, it assists Erich Kleiber with the Opéra of State of Berlin, before working in Greece. In 1930, at the time of a concert with the Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin, he becomes the first soloist of his time to direct the orchestra of the piano.
Mitropoulos makes its beginnings in the United States in 1936 with the Symphony orchestra of Boston, then settles the following year with Mineapolis, before joining the prestigious Philharmonic orchestra of New York in 1951. It is replaced in 1957 by its pupil Leonard Bernstein with whom it was used as model.
Repertory
It defended precociously the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, in particular its sixth.He played the first of the concerto for piano of Ernst Krenek before carrying out a recording of it. It also defended the contemporary repertory with Roger Sessions, Peter Mennin or Philip Bezanson.
It also directed many operas, initially to Italy, then with the Metropolitan Opera of New York of 1954 with its death in 1960. Its interpretations of the operas of Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss remain in the memories.
Type-setter
Notably influenced by the Second school of Vienna, he wrote many parts for piano, with or without orchestral accompaniment. He carried out transcriptions of works for organ and orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach.
