Dikili Tash
Dikili Tash is a prehistoric Tel. plain of Drama, in Eastern Macedonia, located at approximately 1,5 km in the East of the ancient city of Philips, of which it is the principal precursory site. It measures up to 70 meters in height.
The name of the site means “Pierre drawn up” in Turkish (one finds also the toponym hellenized Ορθόπετρα/ Orthopetra with the same direction): it returns to the monument close to C. Vibius Quartus, a Roman officer who originating in the Roman colony of Philips, was not buried at this place, in the necropolis going along the Via Egnatia which passed to the foot of the tel.
The Tel. is a Neolithic site major (5000-3000 av. J. - C.), identified since the 19th century, and excavated at the 20th century by the French École of Athens and the Greek archaeological Service.
