Diego de Saavedra Fajardo

Diego de Saavedra Fajardo (born the May 6th 1584 with Algezares, province of Murcie - died the August 24th 1648 with Madrid) was a writer, statesman and Spanish diplomat of the Siècle of gold. He is regarded as the greatest policy of the reign of Philippe IV.

Biography

Of noble ascent, related with the marquis de Vélez, Diego de Saavedra Fajardo studied the Right to the Université of Salamanque between 1600 and 1608. Thereafter, he was secretary of the cardinal Borgia, future Pape Alexandre VI, and will be named ambassador of Spain with Rome.

Jorge Luis Borges gives us in memory the remarks that gift Diego de Saavedra Fajardo exposes in connection with the style, in the diligent foreword of its work entitled: “ Corona gótica ”:

“I try in my style to imitate Latin who, with brevity and magnificence, could explain their thoughts, and I reject the vain scruples of those which seek with assignment the purity of the punished terms of the language Castilian, make it soft and upside down. ”

Its major book, “ Idea of a príncipe político cristiano representada as a cian hastened ”, published in 1640, (translated into French as of 1668 under the title the prince chrestien and political , which is certainly that translates best the concerns of the Hispanic world of its time.

In connection with the Public finances, Diego de Saavedra Fajardo recommends that the budgets should be balanced by the reduction of the expenditure because the “capacity is insane and no brake has to make all economic imprudences”.

In a posthumous work, “ literary Republic ”, small lampoon in the kind of Érasme, full with atticism and fine mocking remark, published for the first time at Alcalá in 1670, Diego de Saavedra Fajardo presents, in the form of a dream supposed, its reflections on the classic authors and the literature of its time.

Its complete works were published in Madrid in 1853.
