Didier of Lombardy

Didier of Lombardy (in fact, Desiderius ) (v. 710 - † a. 774), duke lombard of Tuscan (?), qualified also sometimes of “duke of Istrie”, is the last King of Lombards of Italy (757 - 774).

Aistolf, king of Lombards, having died without children, Didier gathered an army and forced Rachis, brother of Aistolf, to yield its rights to him, 757. It attacked then the pope Etienne II; but was pushed back by Pépin the Brief. In 770, it gave his daughter to Charlemagne hoping to have in this prince a sure ally; but as of the following year, it had the pain to see his repudiated daughter, and in 773 its own States were invaded by his/her son-in-law, whom had called the pope Adrien Ier, threatened by Lombards. Overcome by the Frank of Charlemagne, besieged and taken in Pavia, capital lombarde, it capitulates in March 774 before being sent to the monastery of Corbie (current Picardy) or of Liege until the end of its days, perhaps towards 786.
