Didier Lockwood

Didier Lockwood (February 11th 1956, Calais), Violin ist of Jazz French.

Biography

Born in a musician family, it obtains the First Price of the National Academy of Calais and modern music of SACEM for its composition for Violon prepared in 1972. He admires the classical music, but, initiated by his big brother Francis, pianist, he will direct himself towards the music with oral tradition. He discovers the amplified violin and prefers to rather integrate the group of Jazz-rock'n'roll Magma into 17 years than to try the entry to the CNSM of Paris.

Engaged in the Big band of Michel Dovecote, it is pointed out by Stephan Grappelli which proposes to him to accompany it in its rounds. It is then invited by the Pianiste Dave Brubeck and begins a career solo.

It connects then the albums with various formations, in particular its famous DLG (Didier Lockwood Group). He plays in company of Martial Solal, Gordon Beck, NHOP, Michel Petrucciani, Aldo Romano, André Ceccarelli, Jean Paul Céléa, Miles Davis, Lenny White, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, the Frères Marsalis or Barbara, Claude Nougaro, Ivan Paduart, Richard Bohringer, Jacques Higelin, etc He remains on several occasions with the the United States where he records some albums.

Its success is not contradicted, and it is rewarded by a Victoire for the music in 1985, a gold disc, and receives in 2003 the Légion of honor.

It explores new horizons permanently, as testifies some its spectacle “Omkara” carried out with the choreographer (dancer of Bharata Natyam) type-setter (player of Vinâ) Indian Raghunath Manet.

It is also famous for its solos of the “gulls”, electronic demonstrations of effects for solo violin (it imitates these birds as well as a train or even plunges us in Arab, Chinese environments or gipsies by superimposing accompaniment and solo).

Didier Lockwood was also noticed by his teaching implication, since it publishes a method of Improvisation entitled Cordes and hearts (price SACEM 2002), and creates in 2001 the CMDL (Center of the Musics Didier Lockwood), a school of improvisation.

He is in load of the vice-presidency of the High council of artistic and cultural education which was entrusted to him jointly, on October 19th, 2005, by the two French Ministers for the culture and the communication, and state education, higher education and research.

He is married with the singer Caroline Casadesus (girl of the leader Jean-Claude Casadesus and grand-daughter of the actress Gisele Casadesus) with whom he divided the poster in the musical production the Jazz and the Diva (named with the Victoires of the music 2006).
