Dictionary of the French Academy

The Dictionnaire of the French Academy is a Dictionnaire of the French language, whose drafting - under the direction of its perpetual general secretary - and diffusion constitute one of the missions of the French Academy.

Its drafting is extremely slow. The ninth edition - whose drafting started in 1972, under the direction of Maurice Druon then Helene Carrère d' Encausse with a publication of the first volume in 1992 - is not, in March 2007, which with the word “periodically”. It is thus not known yet if “brain-storming” and “Sérendipité” is or are not French words.

There is no actualization of this drafting. If the word “Créativité” had not been allowed - following the intervention of Louis Armand - in the ninth edition, it would still not be a French word. And it would have some chances to become it only at the time of the tenth edition of which it is not possible to envisage the date today.

Its diffusion - which, before Internet, was confidential and made an untraceable and mythical dictionary of it - made an extraordinary jump with its setting on line. It is now a language dictionary accessible to all.
