Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities
The Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities of Charles Victor Daremberg and Edmond Saglio is a dictionary published starting from the 1877 in 10 volumes and until 1919 at Hachette. It aims to directly competing with the “ Altertumswissenschaft ” German universities which are the Masters uncontested in the field of the Années 1810.
A monumental work
If the articles are sources in many fields by the control of the textual sources, its contents are not sometimes up to date any more because of the archaeological discoveries of which the epigraphy, of the Numismatique. In addition, the problems were renewed deeply thanks to the contributions of sociology and the anthropology, in which the specialists in antiquity integrated the methods.
It has an undeniable financial asset, and must be placed against all the other large Dictionaries of antiquity which appear in Europe at the same moment.
