Dictation of Mérimée

The Dictée of Mérimée is a Dictée which would have been written by Prosper Mérimée at the request of the empress Eugenie in order to distract the court. Napoleon III would have made seventy-five faults, the empress sixty two, Alexandre Dumas twenty-four, Octave Layer nineteen and Metternich, ambassador of Austria, three.
To the advertisement of the results, Alexandre Dumas would have turned to Metternich to ask him: “When do you go, prince, to present to you to the Academy to teach us the orthography? ”.
The dictation

Alternative
This alternative of the Dictée known as “of Mérimée” would have been made with a meeting Château of Saint-Cloud (1868). It comprises some additional sentences and O how much twisted in the second paragraph. And the called upon saint is not any more the same one.

Remarks
It should be noted that this dictation, so difficult is it, is not an absolute reference as regards Orthographe, but well rather a historic building . Thus, “him or it is cens' ée' ” is unfortunately faulty since the subject not being defined (“him or it”), it is the male which should have carried it: the text of origin was however thus spelled. It is this state of the text which is published here. No other error was listed.
In addition the text of the dictation undoubtedly was the subject of updates to follow the evolution of the language.
The historical Dictionnaire of the French orthography of Nina Catach indicates the evolution of the C-Ws communication according to the successive editions of the dictionary of the French Academy (the forms awaited in a text dating from the Second Empire are in fat):
- 1694 - 1718: belistre, 1740 - 1935 becomes Belître the disappearance of the S justifying the appearance of the circumflex accent, as in the majority of the case of C-Ws communication comprising such an accent;
- 1694 - 1835: Misconception , 1878, 1935 becomes Contresens;
- 1694 : Phthisis, 1718 - 1835: Phthisie , 1878, 1935 becomes Phtisie.
The ninth edition in the course of the dictionary of the Academy (volume 1st, A-Enz, 1992) gave up Belître and states nothing any more that C-Ws communication comprising a E: Bélître, term followed by a returning Rhombus to the alternative Bélitre appearing as an annexe under the Ratio of 1990.
