Diary (film, 1993)

Synopsis

Nanni likes to roll, the summer, in the deserted streets of Rome, from one district to another, questioning passers by. Its greater joy, to dance in a popular ball. Sometimes, it stops to see a film. One day, it goes to Ostie and Casalpalocco on the spot where Pasolini was assassinated.

Nanni is in the search of a quiet corner to write, it thinks of finding it with Lipari, in his/her friend Gerardo. But the island, invaded by the estivants, is too noisy.

Nanni has just been operated of a cancerous tumor to the lung. Previously it had absorbed so many drugs, follow-up so much of treatments, without curing prurit which pourrissait the existence to him, that it does not have more, from now on, which a confidence limited in medicine.

This film, Price of the setting in scene with Cannes in 1994, arrives at being at the same time very egocentric person and very generous. Nanni Moretti speaks in these three chapters about sound Diary only about only one thing: itself. But while speaking about him only, it returns us to our own realities, limits, desires. This film is really a diary because one finds there also expressions of his author on the world which surrounds it: the Italian cinema, the refusal of violence to the cinema, fear of the bétise (that of the majority, that of the intellos, the parents, the children, the doctors…).

It is as a formidable display of funnier characters the ones as the others: Moretti, itself, overlapping its Vespa through the various districts of Rome the beautiful one, dancing in the middle of a festival or in a trattoria , stopping to go to the cinema, to visit a house under a fallacious pretext (location for a musical comedy on a pastrycook trotskist in Italy of the Thirties), approaching a motorist to strike to him a truth or Jennifer Beals ( Flashdance ) for extasier on the convenience of his shoes and to pass for insane. Moretti still, energy of island in island in the search of a place where to create, wandering of doctor as a doctor to find a remedy for this evil which corrodes it. Gerardo, his/her friend, large intellectual who ends up falling in love with the Brazilian soap-operas. The mayor of Stromboli dreaming to make of its island a film. Parents of this island where their single children make the law and prevent the phone conversations from leading to another thing that a ubuesque sound zoo. This film critic which, corroded by the remorse, cries over its pillow. These doctors, prince of the dermatologists or acupunctor Chinese, who cannot listen.

A few touching moments come as to recall us as all that is not very far from the life: “that it would be beautiful an only made film of houses” tells us Moretti while making us visit the city such as it knows it, beyond the tourist courses, its visit with the monument in memory of the assassination of Pier Paolo Pasolini, this balloon of foot rebounding in front of a boat which leaves the port, growing distress of this man vis-a-vis a deaf medicine, its last chemotherapy. And finally there is this glance of the last plan, where the author/actor looks at us right in the eyes, like saying to us: “and you, who are you? ”

It should then be said that this film constant and is crossed by an extraordinary band by the quality and the ecclectism of its music (Khaled, Keith Jarrett,…)

Yes, really this Diary is a beautiful meeting with “splendid a quadragénaire” like says it itself Nanni Moretti.
