Diana Krall

Diana Jean Krall (November 16th 1964 with Nanaimo, Colombia-British) is a Pianiste and Canadian Chanteuse of Jazz . Although white from skin, it is characterized by a voice from a heat which one generally allots to the black artists.

Biography

Its beginnings

Diana Krall was born in a family from musicians with Nanaimo, Canada. She learns how to play of the piano at 4 years. At the school it starts to play in an small group of jazz. 15 years, she plays regularly in several restaurants of Nanaimo.

At 17 years it obtains a grant of Vancouver International Jazz Festival to study with the Berklee College off Music, with Boston, and spends three years there.

In Nanaimo it drew the attention of the bass player Ray Brown, former husband of Ella Fitzgerald and lasting a long time member of the Trio of Oscar Peterson, and Jeff Hamilton. After hearhaving heard it, Brown and Hamilton persuade Diana Krall to move with Los Angeles. She studies then with the pianist Jimmy Rowles, with whom she starts to sing. That leads it to contact influential professors and producers. In 1990 it moves with New York.

Professional path

Diana Krall leaves its first album, Stepping Out , in 1993. She recorded it with the bass player John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton. She thus draws the attention of the producer Tommy LiPuma, who produces its second album, Only Trust Your Heart (1995).

Its third disc, All for You , left in 1996, is named for a Grammy Award and remains during 70 weeks in the classification jazz of the Billboard. Coils Scenes (1997), where Krall is accompanied by Russell Malone with the guitar and from Christian McBride with the double bass success obtains quickly.

Arrangements of Johnny Mandel form the background of When I Look In Your Eyes , left in 1999. It obtains several nominations with the Grammy Awards, which reward it like Meilleure Musicienne de Jazz for the year. In August 2000 it launches out in a round in 20 cities with Tony Bennett. In 2001 it leaves The Look off Coils , created by Claus Ogerman. This album integrates Signal 10 of Billboard 200, and arrives at the first place at Canada, where it obtains four platinum discs.

In September 2001, it begins a world tour. Its concert in Olympia of Paris is recorded: it is its first disc live : Live in Paris . It arrives at the 5th place at Canada, and allows him to gain one second reward with the Grammy Awards (Better disc of vocal jazz), as well as Juno Award.

After its marriage with Elvis Costello in December 2003, it works with him to write words, and starts to compose its own songs, which gives The Girl in the Other Room (2004). Temptation , a song composed by Tom Waits, arrives at the first place of World Jazz Charts (which relates to the United States, Germany, France, Japan and China).

Honors

In 2000, it obtains off the Order British Columbia. In 2003, it obtains honorary PhD of the university of Victoria. The following year it enters in Canada' S Walk off Famed. In 2005, it becomes officer of the Ordre of Canada. It is honorary member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (his/her mother died of a multiple myélome).

Family

Diana Krall and the British musician Elvis Costello marries the December 6th 2003 close to London. The December 6th 2006 the singer gives rise to New York with their two children, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James.

James Krall is his father. Its large collection of recordings helped the singer to attend the music of artists of legend. His/her mother, Adella, died of a multiple Myélome in 2002, during the time when it loses also her mentors, Ray Brown and Rosemary Clooney. The singer has a sister, Michelle, who supports the career of the artist actively.
