Diagram of classification

In the Métadonnée S a diagram of classification corresponds to the descriptive information of an organization or division of objects in groups, based on common characteristics of the objects.

The standard of register of metadata ISO/IEC 11179 uses diagrams of classification with an aim of classifying the managed items, like the elements of data, in a Registre of metadata.

Benefit of the use of diagrams of classification

There are many advantages to implement one or more diagrams of classification for a whole of objects. In particular:

  • That makes it possible a user to quickly find an object in a great whole of objects;
  • That makes easier the detection of doubled blooms;
  • That allows the tranport Sémantique (significance) of an object which is not transmitted by the name of object or the definition.

Examples of diagrams of classification

One finds hereafter examples of various diagrams of classification. This list goes roughly from abstract to most formal:

  • Key word: list words or expressions not categorized with an object;

  • Thesaurus: list words or expressions categorized associated with an object;
  • Taxonomy: formal list of controlled words organized of the abstract to the specific one;
  • Data model: organization of words or expressions which have complex relations N;
  • network (mathematics): organization of objects in a graph;
  • ontology: organization of objects in an acyclic graph with multiple heritages.

A Terme of representation is an example of diagram of classification for the elements of data.
