Dhuis

The aqueduct of Dhuis was built under the Second Empire in order to feed Paris in Drinking water.

Description

The starting point of the aqueduct with Pargny-la-Dhuys (canton of Cop in Brie - Aisne), is at an altitude of 128  m to arrive at 108  m in the tank of Ménilmontant (Paris). Its overall length is of 131,162  km for a slope of 0,10  m/km. Its medium flow is of: 22000  m ³ /jour.

It crosses 21 valleys a depth ranging between 20 and 73  m by means of as many siphons, and crosses the south of the department of the Aisne, the Seine-et-Marne, the Seine-Saint-Denis (where the aqueduct crosses Gagny, Raincy, Villemomble, Rosny-sous-Bois, Noisy-the-Dryness, Romainville, Montreuil-sous-Bois and Bagnolet) before arriving to Paris, by the Door of Ménilmontant and leading to the Tank of Ménilmontant, managed today by the Public limit company of management of water of Paris.

In 1896, these tanks served then the high districts of Montmartre, Belleville and Passy.

History

The decree of March 4th, 1862 declares the public utility. The work divided into two batches, started at the end of June of 1863. Water could be introduced into the aqueduct on August 2nd, 1865! The regular distribution began the next on October 1st.

The aqueduct of Dhuis cost 18 frank million of the time including the purchase of the falls of the factories of Dhuys and the acquisition of the sources and the factories of the Surmelin. In 1889, the quantity of annually distributed water rose on average to 66 million m ³ for a price of 0,113 F/m ³.

Currently, the aqueduct of Dhuis feeds out of drinking water the amusement park Disneyland Resort Paris with Marne-the-Valley. Only the surplus is directed towards Paris.

The Walk of the acqueduc of Dhuis

The Agence of the green areas of the area of Ile-de-France (AEV-IdF) signed in 1997 a convention with and EauDeParis (SAGEP) a convention for the installation of a 27 km length continuous walk, between the Parisian crown and the edges of the Marne, on the work which belongs to the Ville of Paris.

This installation, evaluated with 6 million euros, is financed by AEV-IdF, and relates to 13 communes located in Seine-Saint-Denis and Seine-et-Marne.

The walk will have a variable width from 10 to 20 meters, that is to say a total installation of approximately 37 Hectare S, allowing the realization of a walk pedestrian and cyclist.

In order to protect the viaduct and the drinking water which circulates there, the riders will not be allowed (possible pollution of the aqueduct), and there will be no plantations of trees in the influence (mini distance of 6 m on both sides of the axis of the viaduct)

The design of the project is due to the assisted agency of landscape designers Signes Tugec research department, retained in 1999 after an international contest, which is structured by the will to carry out a green ribbon in balcony on a large variety of landscapes .

The inauguration of the walk is envisaged in spring 2008. Work was completed to 75% at the end of 2006.
