Devil and the Good god

the Devil and the Good god is a drama in three acts of Jean-Paul Sartre published and represented in 1951.

Summary

The part is held in the Germany 16th century, at the time of the revolt of the peasants against the Église.

Gœtz, bastard of a noble family, took part, then betrayed the rebellion of Worms and killed his/her brother who directed it. Disobeying the orders of the Archbishop, it decides to shave the city by simple desire for making the Mal and for defying God.

To save the clergy threatened by Nasty which directs an army of the poor, Heinrich, modest priest, delivers the city to Gœtz. This last which is on the point of ordering the massacre is convinced by Heinrich that the Bien is more difficult to make in this world than the Mal. By challenge, Gœtz decides “to change camp”. It releases its Catherine mistress-hostage-whore, who will die of sorrow; it distributes its grounds to the peasants, that will start a war; it is made the prophet of the love, his non-violent followers will be made massacre.

It is withdrawn with Hilda in the forest where it carries out a life of insane hermit, until the visit of Heinrich who comes to ask him for accounts. He affirms the death of God to him, and ends up agreeing to direct the army of Nasty.
