Deventer

Deventer (of the Low-Saxon : Deaventer ) is a city of the east of the Netherlands in the province of Overijssel.

Deventer received the charter of city in 956. Starting from this date, fortifications of defense were built.

Between 1000 and 1500, Deventer developed thanks to its port, located on the river IJssel, accessible to the large ships.

Deventer was member of the Hanseatic League.

Importance

January 1st 2005 the commune of Deventer amalgamated by absorbing the old commune of Bathmen. The commune resulting from this fusion includes/understands in addition to Deventer and Bathmen the villages and the districts of:

  • Apenhuizen,
  • Averlo,
  • Colmschate,
  • Diepenveen,
  • Dortherhoek,
  • Lettele,
  • Linde,
  • Loo,
  • Okkenbroek,
  • Oude Molen,
  • Pieriksmars,
  • Schalkhaar,
  • Tjoene
  • Zuidloo.

In 2004 the commune of Deventer of the time had 89  142 inhabitants and the commune of Bathmen had 5  of it; 328.

History

Festivities

Every year in the month of August is held in largest Deventer Marché to the books of Europe. Overige jaarlijke activiteiten zijn het festival COp den Berghe (meestal COp Hemelvaartsdag) in Deventer COp stelten meestal begin juli.

Deventer heeft het oudste stenen door in oudste wetenschappelijke bibliotheek (Atheneumbibliotheek) van Nederland. -->
