Devendra Banhart

Devendra Banhart (born the May 30th 1981, with Houston, Texas) is a Auteur-compositeur American Chanteur .

Although it was born in Texas in 1981, it grows until the old one 13 years in Caracas in Venezuela. It returns then to the United States because of political instability. At the same period, his/her parents initiate it with the music (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,…) and with the religious texts (Bhagavad-Gîtâ, Jalal Ud DIN Rumi…). In 2002, located by Michael Gira of the label Young God Records, it leaves on this label its first album Oh Me Oh My… Left work-in-progress, its breath, the guitar squeaks but the songs take form. Devendra records in its room on an old man tape recorder 4 tracks. Tracks even directly from the responder of Noah Georgeson and are recorded when Devendra, inspired, was on the road. Quasi unknown in France at the beginning of 2005, it is revealed with the French public by the cover and an eulogistic article of Télérama and a round in concerts after the exit of the album Cripple Crow . It is from now on one of the most known artists and most prolific of the revival Psyché folk or néo-hippie with Joanna Newsom, Cocorosie and Antony and the Johnsons. He is member of the group Vetiver with his friend Andy Cabic who accompanies it on scene. In 2004, he is the gathering author of a compilation of the friendly groups of the same musical current in the USA: " Golden delicious Apples off The Sun". In 2005, it does a song offer to UNICEF at the time of a disc of benevolence Do They Know It' S Hallowe' in? . In September 2006, one could on television see a publicity for a Renault car accompanied by a song of Banhart, I Feel Just Like has Child, drawn from the album Cripple crow.

Often compared with Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston or Syd Barrett, its music tends to the diagram. Simple guitar and minimal instrumentation are enough to emphasize its voice out-mode and its poetry surrealist naturalist, and inspired, with the image of its small pockets of discs which it draws. Starting from the album " Cripple Crow" , Devendra shows a musical blooming and is off surrounded from now on of a group with whole share the Queens Sheeba with which it composes and turns. He forsakes the side folk intimist which had made the success of its first albums to develop a rich and communicative music.
