Development funds of the United Nations for the woman

The Development funds of the United Nations for the woman (UNIFEM) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UNO) and is associated with the Programme of the United Nations for the development (UNDP). Its role is to promote the participation of the women in the economic life and policy of the Pays in the process of development and to improve the condition of the women throughout the world.

Its seat is with New York, with the the United States.

History

It is following the Conférence of the United Nations on the women of Mexico City of 1975 that in 1976 was created the Fonds of voluntary contributions for the decade of the United Nations for the woman by a resolution of the General meeting of the United Nations.

December 14th, 1984, the General meeting of the United Nations made it permanent and associated it with the UNDP.

Role

Its slogan reflĂȘte (, or in French To work for the emancipation of the women and the equality enters the sexes its objective, which is articulated around four points:
  • to reduce the poverty and the exclusion of the women
  • to eliminate violence against the women
  • to stop the propagation of VIH/sida in the female population
  • widening the access of the women to the positions of responsibility within the governments and in the rebuilding after a conflict

The current executive director is Noeleen Heyzer.
