Devdas
Devdas is a Bengali novel published in 1917, written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee (1876-1938, of its Bengali name of birth " Chattopadhyay")
It is the history of a love impassioned and opposed between Devdas, wire of a rich person " zamindar" (owner of several villages), and its neighbor Paro or Parou (diminutive of Parvati or Parvoti), girl of neighbors of a more modest social condition. The family of Devdas being opposed to their union, Devdas will sink in the forfeiture and the alcohol, while Paro will be resigned to marry a widowed rich person.
In a translation of Amarnath Dutta, the narrator concludes this history by these moving words: " I do not have any idea of what Parvoti became now following so many years. I do not seek to know it either. But it is for Devdas that I test a deep sorrow. After having read the tragic history of its life, you will undoubtedly test the same feeling as me. Néammoins, if ever you rencontez unhappy, one discharged and a sinner like Devdas, then request for its heart. Request so that, no matter what it occurs, nobody dies in the same way pitiful that Devdas. Death does not save anybody. But that at this last hour, the face of death receives the touch of affectionate fingers, that the flame of the life dies out under the glance of a filled up face of affection and compassion, that he sees at least a tear in the eyes of an human being. It would be for him a happiness sufficient at the time of its departure for the other monde."
Often compared with a Indian Romeo and Juliette, the Romance was an immense success and was the subject of several translations and of many film adaptations in India, one of most famous is that of Bimal Roy, most recent being that of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
